Identity Theft

You’ve either experienced it yourself or heard the horror stories; people whose identities were stolen and the devastation that followed. Identity thieves use countless tactics to gain access to personal information, impersonating their victims to open credit cards, transfer home titles, steal Social Security numbers, cash checks, and more. The list is endless, and if you’ve ever walked through that nightmare, you know how deeply it can disrupt a life.

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:27

I believe another kind of identity theft is happening in our culture every day, the erasing of our God-given biological identity. Science confirms what Scripture has always affirmed: sex is rooted in the body, written into our DNA, and revealed in the complementary design of male and female. Our chromosomes, our physiology, even the way new life comes into the world all testify to an intentional Creator who designed humanity with purpose. God did not create generic people and leave us to decide later who we would be; He formed men and women with distinct strengths that together reflect His image. To separate gender from biology is to separate a masterpiece from the Artist who shaped it. What was once understood as a sacred reality has been recast as a personal preference, and many of us have accepted that shift without considering how far it pulls us from the beauty of God’s original design.

Scripture speaks clearly about this distinction. “So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). From the beginning, God established humanity as male and female. Gender was not presented as a trend or a social construct but as a divine design woven into creation.

I sometimes joke that I’d like to identify as a size two, lower tax-paying, younger version of myself, but we all know that doesn’t change reality! When society asks us to deny basic biological truths, it places real costs on real people. We see it in women losing privacy in spaces meant for them, in athletic opportunities being taken away, and in classrooms where students feel pressured to speak in ways that conflict with their convictions.

Parents, myself included, are pushing back because we see the confusion and pain this ideology can bring into our children’s lives. Public schools and universities, institutions funded by all of us, have become some of the strongest promoters of these ideas, often without room for respectful disagreement.

Here is what I hold to be true: human beings do not define sex or gender, God does. Every person deserves dignity and compassion while also holding biological truth and reality upright. We can love our neighbors while still standing for what is real and true. As Christians, we are called to this standard and nothing less.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for creating each of us with intention and purpose. Help us to see ourselves and others through Your eyes, grounded in truth and filled with grace. Give us courage to speak with love, wisdom to walk faithfully, and compassion for those who are confused or hurting. Guard our hearts from fear and our words from pride, and teach us to reflect Your design in all we do.

Amen.

Reflection Question

In a culture that constantly asks me to redefine truth, how can I stand firmly in God’s design while still showing the love and gentleness of Christ to those around me?
